Run-On Memories....

The young man at-bat had quite soundly connected with the fastpitch, and I watched him seemingly fly around first base, on his way to second. Impressed, I remarked that he was a very swift and surefooted runner. If memory serves, (a statement that is becoming more and more of a vague certainty), I had never before experienced the level of velocity that I was witnessing.  I tried to imagine what it would be like to run as effortlessly as the athlete on the ball field. However, with a sudden jolt of finality, I realized that I could no longer remember what it feels like to run at all...effortlessly or otherwise.

Yes...of course...I remember the act of actually running. Fleeing a scene, scurring in a blind panic from the wrath of older brothers, or chasing after a departing school bus in full-throated desperation. These are but a few of some very fine examples. Years ago, I also ran with a small group of other twenty-plus-year-olds as we trained and prepared ourselves to run in the annual Portland Marathon. We never did participate in the event, reaching twelve miles in our training and then, just as suddenly, losing interest. Why we didn't continue, I can't remember. Although I never did participate in a marathon, I continued with my daily runs. That, however, seems to be a lifetime ago...back before Ataxia put the brakes on.

Speaking of putting the brakes on...I have several fond, and not-so-fond, memories of riding a two-wheeled bike when I was a kid. Fond memories included the days of attaching stiff playing cards or sports cards to the spokes of my purple banana-seated stingray bicycle. I loved doing this when I rode around because I felt supremely cool. Of course, I'm sure that everyone who observed me thought I was riding a huge, mean motorbike.

I'd love to re-live those carefree biker days....by placing cards in the wheels of my walker. Alas, the wheels are solid....not an open design with spokes.  I can only suppose that they are made this way in an attempt to dissuade gangs of older people at retirement homes roaming the halls with cards in their wheels. Soon biker clubs might begin to make an appearance in the homes...as the sound of Harley's continuously ran up and down the passages.

A few of the not-so-fond memories include accidentally squeezing the front brakes instead of the back brakes. Braking of this nature resulted in an instant rising of the back of the bike. Which, in turn, would transfer into a quick Superman-like dive over the handlebars. Another "non-fond" memory involved running headlong into immovable objects, such as a curb, or a wall. At this point, I suddenly would find myself being propelled forward off of my bike seat. With both feet still planted on the pedals...I would come down hard to perform a random spot-check of the strength and integrity of the bike frame. Although I never saw these spontaneous quality control checks to be enjoyable...knowing that I was mounted on a sturdy craft gave me the boost of confidence needed. After all, I would be taking my bike over the makeshift ramps that all the neighborhood kids had set up in our backyard. Structures of excellent build quality and construction that we had so carefully slapped together out of whatever odd-sized scraps of wood we could find lying around. There were possibly four to five summers when my vocabulary consisted of, " what's for dinner?...can I go?...and, " I think we could make a ramp outta that!"

We were forever designing and building new ways to gain precious seconds of air time. Of course, the ramps that were made by the ten-to-fourteen-year-old professionals lacked any form of inspection for general safety. Neither were there checks for stable working conditions or the well-being of the kid going over the said ramp. Also unheard of was safety gear of any kind...for two distinct reasons. One was that any safety equipment only added unnecessary weight and drag that would slow a rider who wanted every bit of speed possible. EVERYTHING...from a helmet to extra padding in your clothes was off-limits. Everyone knew the risks...and clearly understood that they were running the possibility of a young death...severe pain...or worse of all, looking like a wimp to any neighborhood girl that happened by.

The presence of a single square of two-ply bathroom tissue anywhere on your person was grounds for scrubbing the jump. If this happened, you might also discover that your, "backyard ramp- jumping/disregard for the sanctity of your own life," privileges were now under serious threat of being revoked. No one wanted to return to the halls of middle school with the shame of having just spent a jumperless summer because of a vagrant rule infraction.

The second reason that safety equipment was not worn...was because it wasn't needed. Thinking that it possibly might be was unfathomable...end of the story.

When the televised antics of motorcycle stuntman Evel Knievel came to the forefront of our notice...well, our style began to change. Suddenly we saw the possibilities of a second ramp...this second quality structure being for the triumphant landing. In the long run, it didn't quite work as envisioned...and for that, I'm glad. Had it been a success I'm sure that the next logical step would've been to line up a few derelict school buses between the ramps. At the very least, it would've been politely suggested that several friends and I lay down between the two ramps, while one of my older brothers flew over us on his bike.

There was no scientific reasoning behind the placement of the second ramp or the distance from the first ramp, (known in pro circles as the launching-point), other than a non-committal shrug of the shoulders, and a muttered, "looks 'bout right." It was then kindly, and democratically, decided that one of my brothers should attempt the first jump. It was also determined that the two ramps should be moved to the far end of the gravel driveway...allowing for my brother to enter the jump zone at full velocity and not lose precious speed by the drag of the grass in the yard. The only drawback any of us could see was the possibility that attempting the jump on a gravel driveway could...just possibly... increase the pain index of an unsuccessful touchdown. Again, however, as none of us planned to crash, this notion was quickly set aside.

Like the failed attempt at jumping the Grand Canyon by Evel Knievel in nineteen-seventy-four...my brother's jump ended our two-ramp dreams. As we watched him approach the launching-point...pedaling fiercely, with a grim determination on his face...we collectively held our breath. We watched him as he hit the first ramp...we watched as he shot into the air...and we watched as he came down short by several feet of the second ramp. The front of the bike came down first and plowed into the ramp...and as we watched my brother begin to unceremoniously roll in the driveway...I knew that two things were now showing themselves to be painfully obvious. First, our days of ramp jumping were drawing to a close...and secondly, our quickly disregarded theory about the effects of gravel in the event of a crash was uncannily accurate.

To bring this back around to running...the ability to do so proved to be beneficial for me that day...as I went into a full-on panic mode and ran screaming for help. This story from my childhood returns me to my original point, which was...that I remember running...I just don't recall how actual running feels.

How does this help...or relate to Ataxia. I was thinking about how easy it is for us that have lost abilities to become negatively focused on those losses. I find though that letting memories become a joyful thing in my life...instead of negative ones that serve to only accentuate the losses...helps me to face the present in a positive way. It is not always possible...or easy...but I try to see "lost abilities" as opportunities to share memories from days past. Besides...I find that I no longer desire to jump a purple-banana seated stingray bike in the driveway!

Thank you for letting me share this one with you.

Forever Scarred....A Simple Update

"Well, that's going to leave a mark!" And indeed, an MRI look-see at my Cerebellum in 2003 which confirmed the diagnosis....showing that Cerebellar Ataxia had left it's ugly mark then and continues leaving physical markers now...like pushpins in a map. For the first 14 years or so, I had an unknown form of SCA....but because I wanted a number like it seemed everyone else had, I decided to designate one and apply it to myself. For a while, I jokingly told others that I had SCA 24/7.

Recent genetic testing has, however, upgraded me into a different category...a much more rare form labeled SCAR. Actually, my exact diagnosis is SCAR 8.....which to my understanding is a Recessive Autoimmune form of SCA. It has to do with the SYNE1 Gene.....which I still don't know if it is pronounced SIGN1 or SIN1, although the latter pronunciation would get my vote! Whatever the case, it would seem that all my earlier marks have now left me permanently SCARred.

The recent change, or update to my diagnosis, will have no negative bearing on my forward movement...but I will steadfastly continue to point to the future!

A Question Of Dexterity.....

The last official Blog that I had written and posted...titled, The Two-Pronged Security Breach....was almost 2 years ago. I then decided to take a break from writing and instead post each chapter of the book...The Last Laugh...which I had written over the previous summer. There are also printed copies of this book which come with some extra material. I have been asked on several occasions in the 2 years since I have stopped writing if I intend to continue the Blog...or to write another book...something along the line of, Ok I Was Mistaken, THIS Is The Last Laugh!

When asked this question, my response was always...."I don't think so because I believe I have said all I that want to say on the subject". I felt it was time to move on to other projects. What I have since discovered...is that for the very first time in my short 54 years I underestimated the situation (if you believe that then you and I will get along just fine). Instead, what I have discovered, to my delight...is that there is still plenty of fuel in the creative tank.

I am still draggin' the unwanted guest Ataxia around for a ride...because, after all, it's my life, not his. So, I would love to present you with the next installment...a few thoughts I had, titled...A Question of Dexterity....hope you enjoy it.

 _____________________________________________________________________________

The question of hand-orientation can be a difficult and perplexing concept to fully grasp. I have made the choice of which hand to use much easier for myself.....by creating a simple little rhyming jingle. I sing it whenever I am confused...and I will share it with you. Feel free to use the song whenever you may find it to be helpful. It goes like this...
                                                     Left hand....Right hand,
                                                            it really doesn't matter....
                                                            cuz neither one can.
                                                     Right hand...Left hand,
                                                            can't be hold'n nothin....
                                                            everything falls through...
may as well be clutchin' sand.

I didn't put any musical notes with it...for the purpose of allowing the song to be sung in anyone's preferred musical style. Personally, I was going through kind of an adult contempo-fairytale phase when the limerick started dancing in my head. You should know though that you can put it to any kind of music you want. Do you like Icelandic speed metal? Country music, or Opera maybe?  Whatever fits your style...

Growing up I was always strongly right-handed. In fact, my left side has always been noticeably weaker...both in strength, grip...and overall balance. One side was good(right), and one side was weak(left)....like I was some kind of ataxian-halfbreed. However, I always admired those who were ambidextrous...and was forever trying tasks with my left hand...simple things performed with my right hand, like brushing my teeth, throwing a rock, baseball or hand grenade, or writing my name. These attempts were all failures of course...and thus, I remained firmly right-handed.

As with the general loss of balance, I never fully realized the privilege that it was to be "handed" at all...until, of course, the infamous day that it all waved goodbye. Ataxia has brought many things with it...being the equal opportunity personal and social action that it is...and I no longer have to think about which hand is the most reliable. The dream of ever becoming ambidextrous...easily switching routine tasks from right/left and back to right again...has now become a life of ataxia-dextrous. A world in which anything....at any time...whether in the right or left hand...can be bobbled and dropped. Sort of a frantic juggling, if you will. Ataxia also brings a new definition to being viewed as a person who takes a general "underhanded" approach to life.

The general loss of dexterity may not be "hands-down" the worst byproduct of SCA...but neither does it deserve any clapping or applause. And while I'm on the subject of clapping...my attempts look more like the shewing away of 2 flies...like I am directing fly traffic...as if I'm telling the flies, "you go to the left and you go to the right". Really, all I need is some runway attendants' flashlights.

I would never make a good criminal...I think this is largely due to the fact that I wouldn't be able to write a ransom note or leave any written taunts and little clues. I think that the loss of writing has been the hardest for me. Not to be able to take notes at a meeting...fill out and sign a simple restaurant check....or make a list of unreasonable criminal demands. Like...I want all Kale removed from grocery store produce departments...go, you have 30 minutes!  Speaking of life on the other side of the law...I've also said before that the other thing I couldn't do anymore is to serve as a getaway driver. I no longer possess a driver's license...and I wouldn't want to get caught fleeing a crime scene... without the legal permission to drive a car. I could get into some serious trouble. I might receive a ticket...or get sent to traffic school, and that wouldn't be very......wait for it.....handy!

Ataxia has also given to me some amazing sleight of hand abilities....the gift to make little things suddenly disappear. People ask all the time how I do it...and I don't mind revealing the mechanics behind the illusion either. I always start off with..."see, the first thing you wanna do is get a Neurological disease or condition, either one will work for this trick....."

The Last Laugh..Based On A True Story...The Conclusion

This has been translated into Portuguese and follows the English version.
This is the audio link....www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z304aoRnLw4 In Conclusion.
Now that the book has been completed, there are a few things remaining that I would like to mention:

1. Again, as previously stated at the beginning of the book. …..yes, this was the best that I could do.
2. I very much enjoyed our time together...and, well….will miss you all. Maybe if I write another book sometime in the future (I looked into writing the second book in the past, but I am almost sure that it can’t be done), we can meet again. I would like that. That is, unless….
3. You actually did quit reading the book after the first chapter, “ending.” If this is indeed the case, then you aren’t even aware of this section right now, and this is clearly not meant for you. I don’t know how much more ambiguous I could make that statement.

It has been my intention through the writing of this book, and many of the blogs that I write (shameless plug of my blog) to show a different perspective to a serious neurological disease. My intention is to never make light of the seriousness of SCA, or any other form of Ataxia. I live with it every day...so believe me, I get it. My desires are currently, and have always been, to bring a sense of lightheartedness and humor to those that struggle. Hopefully, it also brings some insight, and understanding, for those individuals who are on the outside of a handicap of a loved one, friend, family member, or acquaintance, and looking in. Who just simply want to know more about Ataxia...and the daily lives of those who have been awarded the joys of Ataxia’s constant and incessant badgering.

At some point, I would love the privilege of meeting you….and the two final thoughts that I would like to leave with you, are….. to encourage you to never give up, or, to ever give in to a handicap...
Thank you for allowing me to share a few of my thoughts, insights, and theories about Ataxia, it has been a pleasure…..all of my prayers, thoughts, and regards are with you.

-Jason.

What next? Words from Melissa Wolfer

We don’t know what is next.  We find it best to take one day at a time.  I’m not saying we bury our heads in the sand.  I’m just of the mindset that each day has enough troubles of its own and speculating what is coming up in the future, is not always productive.  We are grateful for family, friends, and provisions.  We focus on the positives and try to avoid the negatives.  We laugh at ourselves because there is much humor in life.  We don’t find it necessary to mold ourselves into society's stereotypical model.  We ARE different.  It is OK that Jason appears drunk sometimes … but we MUST educate those around us.  Ataxia must become more known in society.  As an example, the first response of the crowd seeing Jason should not be there is a lousy drunk, but it should be … how can I help?

The Last Laugh...Based On A True Story...Chapter 17 Air Of Superiority

Charter 17.jpeg
This chapter has been translated into Portuguese and is available after the English version:
This is the audio link to this chapter...www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaG3k0KR4KE Continued thoughts from chapter sixteen…….

One of the benefits of not being infected is that now I can fully exercise my creativity, in areas of my life that would not exist, if...say, I was unlucky enough to have the Upright Bug. I mean, think of all the opportunities that I now have to invent new ways to accomplish the tasks that lay before me daily. All because of my body's continued efforts to fight off the effects of good balance, and all the other ailments that plague the “unfortunately-infected”.

Frankly, it seems like it might get rather boring…..always knowing what you can expect, and what kind of reactions you will have from your body, in almost every situation. Where's the fun, or adventure in that? Always being able to eat or drink without choking. Forever having the ability to break into a run, leisurely jog, or enter into a game of Hopscotch whenever the mood strikes. Ascending and descending stairways without the use of handrails….my heart truly goes out to people like this. I don't know how they do it. Day, after day….always being understood when they talk and having the burden of legible handwriting.

I suppose these type of people might have their very own type of helper to walk alongside them….sort of like the Passionately Reformed that are there to help us. Since I have an SCA immunity, I don't deal with this issue, so I can only imagine that it might work in the opposite way as how it does for me. In other words, having my wife hold my hand when I'm stepping off of a curb, or walking on uneven ground, would instead be someone walking with an Upright person who would push them whenever they are in a precarious position.

And, how can they possibly manage to get anything in their mouth when they eat? Does someone stand to the back of their chair, shaking it continually, and hitting their elbow occasionally so that they spill on themselves, on the table, floor, and others? Again, I'm only speculating. I'd probably need to do some research, you know, actually look into it for me to have a definitive answer for you on this. But, since I don't know, (and looking into it appears to me to be too much like work), I will only tell you what I do know.

I know that I am concerned, and do not want my standing of having an SCA to be viewed as elitist by the Upright-People, so I have envisioned some ways in which to try and fit into their world. These ideas do not make a perfect, or seamless match, but at least I am trying, right? It's the thought that counts. That's what matters.

It occurs to me that one way to do this would be to invent a device that I would wear on my wrist, a device that would allow me to jump forward in time by twenty to thirty seconds. I'm not talking about a time machine, either...because that is just a little too unrealistic. No, I'm simply talking about a small mechanism that I could activate, which would propel me successfully through a situation, without anyone else knowing it. No longer would the Upright folks be intimidated by my stumbling down a staircase. I could approach the stairs, and activate the device. Everyone would then go into several minutes of a deep trance-like state, while I made my way down the stairs. At the bottom, I would again trigger the little wrist mechanism, and all would reawaken to find me standing at the bottom. All would appear to them as normal, (this, of course, would be what they would consider to be normal).

How many times in public have you stumbled, and lurched ahead into several quick steps? It has happened to me on numerous occasions, and it always seems as if people begin to stare at me. Almost as if, in the act of tripping over my own feet and jumping forward, I am putting on an air of superiority. It has become effortless for me, and they all wish that they could do it. However, again in an attempt to remain humble, and fit into their world, I have come up with a way that I hope will stop the sudden forward sprints.

Through little flaps that will spring out at a ninety-degree angle, which will create air-drag like the flaps on an airplane wing...and three smaller parachutes that will instantly explode from a backpack, I hope to arrest any forward movement quickly. Even though the chutes will remain to be as small a size as possible, they still will probably, (I'm guessing), be noticeable. It may not be a step that will completely solve, and eliminate the problem... but I think the concept is a solid one, and I would hope that a lack of any unwarranted lunges forward would be appreciated, in general, by the infected public.

In my past endeavors to downplay my SCA-based immunity, and draw as little attention as possible to my Ataxia skills, one area continues to plague me. Every time I use any container with a screw-type lid, my Upright-free condition becomes apparent because it takes an effort that is worthy of an Iron Man competition to get the lid back on.

To solve this dilemma, I have decided to invent the world's first Smart-Cap. What is that, you wonder? Well, it is a cap that will align itself correctly on the bottle, rotate all the way to the end of the threads, will sense when it is finished, and then give itself an extra twist to remain tight. The thing is, to make this completely inconspicuous and work without any possible hitch, only those who are legitimately free of the Bug would be aware of the Smart Cap's existence and use one.

They would look exactly like the manual screw tops, and that way the infected would not be able to detect that we are using one. You would just need to carry one or two with you at all times so that if you were put in a situation in public, where a bottle was in use that you didn't know, the lid could be replaced easily and discreetly by you when no one was looking. No one would ever suspect, and you could go through the motions of screwing the lid on the container, while the lid is actually the one doing the work. I guess in a way; this would be like lip-syncing.

On most occasions, if a screw-top beverage confronts me, it would appear that I may also be in the presence of food. If this happens, in order to not embarrass the non-sloppy eaters, or to avoid showing off, I try to keep my food either on my plate or in my mouth. It is not always possible to do this correctly, and so after giving the matter a lot of thought, I decided that what is needed is several sets of clothing that could change their color. They would start out as completely white but would be adaptable to any food coloring that you may spill on them. They would instantly take on whatever color, or shade, that is necessary. Multiple foods of different colors will not be a problem, either, because if more than one color would happen to be introduced to the clothing, it would quickly change itself from a solid print to a pattern of two or more colors. The possibilities are endless, and no longer will the Gifted person feel superior over the individual who doesn't have the gift or ability to spill their food while eating...because now they will appear to be free of even a small hint of food spillage. The only harm in using this type of apparel, and the deployment of said clothing, is that the infected person may think themselves crazy. I mean, they thought you wearing a white shirt...but the next time they looked you appeared to be wearing a red shirt...only to find that moments later you are ensconced in green...and on and on it would go. This could be quite unnerving. Eye clinics would undoubtedly experience a surge in business, due to everyone rushing off to get their eyes checked after one of these encounters... (I was originally going to say that they would see a surge….but that seemed too easy). Maybe I should buy stock in companies that make eyeglasses…?

Anyway, there are enough differences that already exist, which serve to polarize and separate us. My efforts from this point forward are going to be not to let my neurologically-based immunity become one of them.

These kinds of useful technologies could potentially change the way I interact with the general public. Yes, some may be a tad more obvious than others, but I believe the effort not to flaunt an air of superiority to be a worthy goal. Therefore, I will continue to strive for equality and downplay the assumed need by others to fit into their infected world.

Pensamentos continuados a partir do capítulo dezasseis.

Novamente, eu estou apenas a especular.

The Last Laugh...Based On A True Story...Chapter 16 Dishwasher Safe From The Bug

Chapter 16.jpeg
The audio version of this chapter can be found at this link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=RdQxax9bhzU

The Portuguese translated version begins after the English version.
Growing up was sometimes a wondrous adventure, and at other times it was….well, it seemed to be closer to an experimental exercise that was never going to end well. I grew up with two older brothers, who picked on me, and beat me up for numerous reasons, (their favorite reasons, of course, were that I was simply alive, breathing, and readily available).

Allow me to explain what the word “available”, in this context, means. Both of my brothers were believers in, and supporters of, the right to delegate. It could be anything, but mostly it was whatever they didn't want to do, or deemed the called-for task to be unworthy of their time. As the younger sibling, this meant that I was the direct recipient of their rights of delegation, or in other words, I was the delegee. So with this in mind, the term available meant that I didn’t necessarily need to be present...they would seek me out.

Of course, there was one factor that surrounded the act of a successful delegation, one that would ensure that things went smoothly. And that factor was singularly based on whether my parents were around. Our parents would delegate certain things to my older brothers, who in turn would pass these down to me if our parents were then going to be gone for the evening.

My parents would have no sooner gotten into the car, and started to pull out of the driveway when I would hear my name. I'm pretty sure, if memory serves me correctly, that this was close to one of the only times my brothers used my name. In fact, before this I was kind of wondering if they even knew the name of the guy that they were roughing up...but this act, this act towards my personal welfare, always reminded me that yes...yes, they did know.

The obvious question then is, why didn't I just go into hiding, enroll in some form of Federal Protection, or move out of the country whenever I heard my parents making plans to be gone in the evening? Any of these would have worked well as a solution to avoid the approaching unpleasantness, a solution which occurs to me now, but apparently didn't back then.

The same pattern manifested itself so many times, that when I look back on it now, I am very surprised at myself for not taking more preventative measures. It seems, though, that I either; 1...forgot in between each event, which I will chalk up to the early stages of a faulty short term memory, or 2...was an optimist, and was hoping that things would be different the next time. They never were.

There are two distinct memories that I have of those times, and both of those originate within one larger memory. The overall memory was based on a central pattern, which served as the core framework for most of these memories. Just before they would leave the house for the evening, my parents would instruct the oldest brother that certain chores needed to be done by the time they got home. It seemed that the dishes were always playing a significant role in this, and that particular night the counter just so happened to be full of dirty dishes that would need to be washed, dried, and put away.

My parents didn't own an automatic dishwasher back then, but did have several manual dishwasher...and my brothers, in particular, had a favorite one that they liked to use when my parents were absent. That's right; it was yours truly. As soon as the folks were out the door, the ritual would begin.

There was another part of the pattern that I have not mentioned yet, but one that played a significant role in the interaction. That part was the resistance that I forever seemed to attempt. It always happened in the same way….I was told what to do, followed by my first refusal to comply. I would then endure at least five minutes of arm twisting and wrenching, until I agreed that having me do all the dishes was a good plan, and in the best interest for all.

Upon being released from torture, I would regain my wits, and run, screaming that I would not do what they had so kindly suggested to me. The humanitarian-based torture would then be repeated, in much the same way, at least another two or three times, until I had had enough,. Regardless of this fact, though, my brother would always find it a necessity to move the not-so-gentle persuasion into the next phase.

This stage was quite simple. My brother would pin me down, with his knees on my shoulders, and would let large globs of spit dangle from his mouth. These huge wads of spit would come within mere inches of my face before he would suck them up again, temporarily diverting any impending disaster, (only a few times was he unable to retrieve the spit before it got away, and landed on me). Finally, with my spirit broken and bruised a little more than normal, I would formally give in to their demands.

The first memory that stands out is the time that my older brother skipped the painful arm manipulations, and instead, went straight to the threat of making me eat his dirty socks if I didn't do what he prescribed. I, unfortunately, thought this to be a ridiculous and highly implausible threat, and so rather naively called his bluff. He did indeed pin me down, remove his dirty, smelly socks, and proceed to shove them into my mouth. All I can remember is that they had a slightly nutty flavor, along with several other unpleasant, and unidentifiable ones, and to this day I still have a tendency towards cottonmouth that I believe has roots that go back to that event almost forty-five years ago.

The second memory that comes roughly out of the same time frame involved the other brother. His two favorite hobbies were playing with sharp knives, and tormenting his younger brother. Often he would decide to cut out the middleman, as it were,by combining both of these...and during this particular incident, was waving a rather large butcher knife in my face. I had wisely chosen to back up until I couldn't back up anymore because I was now against a wall. The surface that had stopped me from going any further just so happened to be the stained glass window that our Dad had installed beside the front door.

Suddenly, and without a warning, I felt a knee strike me sharply in a place that God had never intended for boys to be struck. I violently doubled over, which unfortunately meant that my backside went right through that stained glass. Dad failed to see any humor in this, and among other punishments, my brother and I had to pay for a new window.

The situations in regards to my brothers, was, however, not what I had come to fear the most during my growing up years. The possibility of contracting rabies was the prevailing thought that kept me in a state of hyper-awareness. There seemed to be a lot of chatter surrounding this hateful disease in the seventies and the eighties...or so it seemed to be in my young mind. So much so, that it appeared to me that every time I was turning around, someone was engaged in a conversation about a rabid animal...or, statistics about how rampant the disease was and how likely you were to be bitten by an infected animal. The subject of rabies even seemed to invariably turn into a discussion about someone they knew who recently had started foaming at the mouth, and contracted Lockjaw.

It didn't help that I grew up on a small farm, and had constant contact with animals. The images in my mind, and the general air of rabies paranoia were not an overall encouragement, either...being highlighted, and becoming the source of Hollywood fare...showcased in such movies as Old Yeller, and the nineteen-eighty three suspense movie Cujo.

The most worrisome detail, and I think what freaked me out the most, was the dreadful and painful cure to which one would be subjected. I wasn't ever really sure if there was any truth to the rumors, but the urban legend went that the only way to treat the disease was to undergo a series of injections. These shots were administered by use of a large needle and went straight into the abdomen. The details of the cure might have been correct, but as a kid who hated needles of any kind, I hoped with everything that I could muster that I would never have to endure this….and apparently, this seemed to work out because I never did have to undergo the dreaded rabies needle. Eventually, I grew out of my paranoia and went on to other things.

I remained worry free, concerning the possibility of contracting any form of a disease, until about the age of thirty-eight. I began to hear murmurs of a rare illness that had been labeled as the Upright Bug. The rumor was that those infected by the sudden, and rare disease, would begin to experience great balance, speak clearly, show signs of eating and drinking without choking, have the dexterity to manipulate small objects and other physical non-difficulties.

At the point in which I became aware of the Upright Bug, I also became aware of how common and widespread it had become. However, before the root of worry even began within me, I learned that a natural resistance to the devastating disease had developed in my body. This particular form of immunity had come to be known as Spinocerebellar Ataxia, but was, as I quickly learned, just a small fraction of a larger group of uninfected people, who had come to be known as The Exceptionally Gifted, or Handicapped for short.

I have since learned that there are several strains of the Upright Bug. One of those strains infects the host in the same general way as all the other forms, with good balance….etcetera, but which also develops a sense of jealousy within the host, a sense of envy that is aimed towards the Gifted. They begin to manifest this in two different ways. Either they become rude, and act arrogant to the point of cruelty in an effort to mask their true feelings of envy, or they begin to mimic the physically challenged and try to include themselves by taking on, and assuming a certain degree of likeness to those who are truly handicapped.

These manifestations appear to be rather pathetic, and one comes to almost pity this kind of Uprightly infected. Their attempts at a pure life can be as simple as trying to park in a handicapped parking space. They may say that it is for convenience, or they may appear to be completely uncaring, but I for one am not fooled for a second. They park in those spots purely out of jealousy.

They may also try to achieve a life of physical limitations by drinking themselves into an inebriated state. As they indulge, they celebrate and have fun, because they know that they are quickly approaching the Gifted, but they always return to an infected reality. Their feeble efforts at impairment have proven to be only temporary. The headaches, and general hangover feelings that these people experience afterward are nothing more than the depression they feel upon this revelation.

Another form of the Upright Bug is found in a group of individuals that have come to be known as the Passionately Reformed. This unique group is able to walk in both worlds. While dealing with some of the problems that arise in the Upright Bug world, they are also able to walk alongside the Gifted, helping them, and often entering into their world in a way that is truly inspiring.

The presence of the Passionately Reformed in my life serves as a constant reminder of what the Upright people go through on a daily basis...and that helps to keep me humble.

My thoughts on this subject are continued in chapter 17...

Permita-me explicar o que a palavra "disponível", significa neste contexto.
