Has medical science helped? Words of Melissa Wolfer...
Jason goes into see his neurologist annually.  She checks his reflexes, monitors the degeneration of his condition and offers advice as needed.  However, the bottom line is that there is not much modern medical science can do.  Sure, there are exercises to strengthen and help the muscles compensate for the lack of coordination.  There is equipment that can be used and installed to make life easier and safer. Even a physical therapist can provide advice on things to try and things to do, to make clumsy limbs do what they are supposed to do.  All these things help, but do not cure or slow the progression of the disease/condition known as Spinocerebellar Ataxia.

What we have noticed is that because Jason’s body works so hard each day just to keep him upright, it does not have the strength to battle the viruses or extend his day a couple more hours. He needs his rest.  He must not ignore the signals from his body.  What does this mean for his partner? I must be more aware.  Does he need help, should he use a walker, should he sit down, do I need to do something for him, etc.?  It also means that I need to keep myself healthy so that I can help him. Although I work, I need to try and do as much from home as possible.  We need to set aside money to make sure that he has those things he needs to make his body safe, handrails, walkers, walking sticks, a good bed, and all the other things that a normal coordinated person takes for granted.

                              ………………………………………………………………

In nineteen eighty-six I attended the Culinary Art Institute which was located in Portland, Oregon. The school had a restaurant that was run by the students, and which was open to the public for dinner. For the students attending, the program was a thirteen-month course that cycled a student through six different disciplines, in one-month increments.

The focus of each of the six classes was on a different aspect of the meal, and so accordingly, we spent the first six months attending the school during the day hours preparing smaller dishes...that we would consume. We would then switch to an evening schedule and do everything again but in a more advanced way. We were now concerned with the evening meal, and wanted it to be a more elegant and refined experience for our diners.

Before I go on and share with you one of the several pointed memories that I have of my time spent at the Culinary School, which is my original intent behind writing about my past culinary education….I need first to address the obvious question that you probably have floating through your mind at this moment. "Jason, you just stated that it was a thirteen-month course?"  "Yes...yes, I did." "Okay, well then, you also said that you went for six months during the day, and six months during the evening." " Again, you would be correct." "Uh..well, unless I'm missing something here, those two statements don't add up."

Mathematics in school, no matter how you added it up, was hands-down my worst subject. I took Algebra One when I was a Sophomore in High School. Then during my Senior year, I decided to take Algebra Two, which was not a requirement. In my moments of quiet reflection, I continue to wonder what possibly could have motivated me to make such a choice. Whatever it may have been, though, I can only imagine that it is a reason that could quite easily go down as one of history's greatest unsolved mysteries....being slightly edged out in that category by the Great Pyramids.

I dropped the math class after one week, to instead try my hand...or hands as it was...at typing. The Algebra Two class had begun by doing a simple review of the equations and properties, for solving some of the problems that were currently happening in the alphabet world, apparently, it had something to do with A and B trying to equal X.  I was completely lost, having not an ounce of recognition for any of those things that the math teacher claimed were fundamental concepts and formulas that I should know from previously having taken Algebra One.

Of course, this all came back to mock me in a rather large way when it came time to help my children with their math homework. I think that I was successfully able to get them past the first grade before they started coming home from school, and saying, "Dad! The answer you showed me was all wrong."

I didn't fare much better in typing class, either. Because thirty-five years ago, typewriters were manual, and in general harder to use in my opinion. I was forever getting my fingers stuck between the keys. However, after several classes, and dogged determination, I did manage to mount a blank sheet of paper correctly, resulting in the paper rolling into the desired alignment, and having it ready to be properly typed on. Not by me, of course, but ready for somebody.

During the first several days of this class, the typing instructor first had us do several things. We had to be able to type with both hands without looking at them. We had to continue to practice this over and over, and only after the successful accomplishment of being able to copy a whole page, while only making a limited number of mistakes, were we allowed to move on.  I never did advance…..at least not based on my skills, or overall command of typing. The teacher moved me up after about one month of my fruitless and straining efforts, long after the rest of the class had moved forward onto the electric machines.

Everyone else in the class was able to type the forty words with only two or three mistakes and do so within the time limit.  I, on the other hand, was able to accomplish the opposite, typing forty mistakes while getting two or three words right within the deadline....and if memory serves, they were single letter words, like I and a...or they were one syllable words, like if and the.

I never did learn to type very well, as this simple act of two-handed coordination seemed to elude me. I truly believe that everything about my growing up years was a precursor for SCA. But this is just a possible explanation because basically, I have no proof that this is the case. Only my suspicion, and the theory that it could be explained in this way.

Anyhow, back to the sub-point of my main point.

I am perfectly aware that six months plus six months does not equal thirteen-months. But, I'm telling you, it was a thirteen-month course, and here's how that whole thing worked. Before the first half started, we went through a one-month course of what might be referred to as Culinary Boot Camp.

This first month introduced us to and began to immerse us in, every aspect of the food-based world. Unfortunately for the Chefs that would be guiding our education through our thirteen-month journey, one of the undesirable lessons that we absorbed rather quickly during this time was the quickest and most efficient way in which to elicit an excited reaction from them.

The students were taught to wash dishes using a three-part washing method. There were three sinks, and each was a different stage in the cleaning process. The first sink was full of warm soapy water, the second sink was full of hot water for rinsing, and the third held water containing a sanitizer, which the dishes would then soak in to finish. The one thing that the students were instructed by the chefs never to do was to leave knives in the first sink because it was soapy and no one would be able to see the potential danger.  Ignoring this warning could result in a terrible cut if someone were to reach in, not knowing the knife was there.

So, what did we do? Why, toss red food coloring into the sink whenever we deemed it necessary, of course. We never tired of this little amusement either, as one of the Chefs would walk around the kitchen yelling, "who cut themselves?" Ah, the elements of immature restaurant humor. I thought it was pretty funny, but maybe you had to be there.

However, the main point of this chapter revolves around the idea of being a Maitre'D at an elegant restaurant. I started to tell you about the school that I went to in 1986 because of a story of mine which happened while I was a student at that Institute.

While attending, the students spent part of the time going through a restaurant orientation, which included waiting on tables, being the wine steward, and of course as a Maitre'D. I was working the front podium one night, and while I was looking down at the list of reservations, I heard the front door open, and a woman say, "excuse me?" I looked up, and it was a woman alright, but she had not one stitch of clothing on….nada...zip. She stood before me totally naked, and apparently very confused. She was looking around like she did not recognize anything, and could not understand where she was.

This confusion of mind, unfortunately for me and for her as well, led to the currently uncomfortable situation. Luckily for me, the dining room was dark and lay somewhat hidden behind the front desk. All of these factors meant that no one else saw her, and I was able to remove my dinner jacket quickly, wrap it around her, and gently, while also displaying that this was a delicate matter of some urgency, push the lady into the front office which was conveniently located right next door.

There were several sets of eyes popping, as the unsuspecting instructors that were in that office at the time, had a half-naked, hysterical woman suddenly thrust upon them. They eventually learned where our surprise guest resided, and someone took her home. I later found out that she had been sunbathing au naturel on her fire escape, locked herself out, got sunstroke, became confused, shimmied down the metal walkway, and then chose our restaurant to stumble into….while I was working! I've never won a random lottery,  nor have I ever been very lucky with a drawing, or door prize of any kind…..but a random naked stranger? Yep... and my fellow students never let me forget the incident for the rest of the time that we were there.

Another story from my time as a waiter in the school restaurant occurred when I was in the rotation as the Dessert Steward. The practice of the dining room was to present the patrons with a cart full of desserts at their table, allowing them to see, and decide on which delectable item looked good to them. On the night that this was my job, one of the desserts that could be chosen by the diner was a Caramel Berry Flambe….which would be cooked tableside.

I had a table of five that chose this dessert, and so I retreated into the kitchen and brought out a cart that was designed for cooking beside the guest’s table. The cart was equipped with several hot plates and shiny copper skillets for a nicer presentation. I proceeded to make the Caramelized Berry Reduction fine, and all was going very well….the people were amazed and impressed at my showmanship.

Things took a bad turn, though, when it came time to set flame to the caramelly dessert. We were supposed to cover the dessert, while it was still in the copper skillet, with a three-ounce ladle of Brandy. We would then ignite the sauce, let it burn itself out within a minute, to the oohs and ahhs of the diners, and then pour the sweet, delectable syrup over the item of their choice. This is not exactly the way it happened when I was in charge, though.

I was doomed from the start, having in haste chosen a six-ounce ladle for flaming the Brandy, instead of the required three-ounce measurement. The second problem was that I had positioned myself in a back corner. In combination, what this all meant was that, not only was the resulting flame higher and more spectacular than expected but when the flame shot into my face and I tried to instinctively back up, I hit the wall, causing my eyebrows to become thoroughly singed. The pungent odor of burnt hair was almost covered up by the sweet caramel smell. Almost.

This particular event, plus others, seemed to serve as imminent signs...precursors, if you will, to my current state of mind (neurologically speaking, of course). I say, “plus others”, because there are other examples of this, including the time that, acting again as a dessert steward I dropped and bounced several French Pastries off the school president's head…..while he was dining with several other businessmen. I will stop with that last example, though, because if I kept going this simple book would turn into a trilogy.

The one thing though that I never had to do as a Maitre'd, was to tell someone that they didn't have a reservation, and therefore they couldn't get in. Or, that they were not wearing the proper dress clothing for our fine establishment. And those...those reasons right there, are the whole reason why I would like to be a Maitre'D today. Well, I would very much enjoy being a Maitre'D where my SCA is concerned, anyhow.
What I wouldn't give to be able to turn him away! To have him show up, and to be able to say, "Nope, sorry, there are absolutely no vacancies." Or, "Sir, are you serious? You can't get in looking that way!" Then I would quit my job immediately, and move very far away so that when SCA called again in an attempt at making another reservation, I would be gone. Or better yet....I would completely sell out, closing the business down straight away...so that SCA would reach an unlisted number when he tried to call.

More than likely, though, neither of these tactics would have ever worked, but I would have at least liked to have been able to try. Regardless, however, SCA is the WHOLE reason behind wishing that I were a Maitre'D today.

Capítulo 4...Eu Desejava ser  Maitre'D

A ciência médica ajudou?

A resposta que me ensinas-te estava tudo errado."

The Last Laugh...Based On A True Story, Chapter 3...The Extended Sleepover

The audio version....www.youtube.com/watch?v=aiSZX0uT1pQ This has now been translated into Portuguese....that version proceeds after the English...

Now what? Words of Melissa Wolfer...
We had a diagnosis, that had not impacted our lives significantly for 11 years, but now things were changing.  How can my extremely talented and wonderful husband adjust his life to fit what his body can handle?  Jason did not want to just sit at home.  First we tried Vocational Rehabilitation, surely they could help him adjust, modify and move on.  However, when the condition was explained fully, that he may not be able to walk, coordinate arms, and yes, his speech might even be affected, there was not much they could do.  So, he made the best of the time available, Jason volunteered for hospice.

He had some setbacks as he tried to navigate the two hospice organizations and plan for the future and his role within the organization.  At the same time, Jason became involved with and eventually led the Albany Ataxia support group.  This was and is a very fulfilling role for him.  In addition, he made LOTS of connections through social media and was featured on a radio program.  He became aware of a need for a support group in Portland, so what did he do, started one … of course!  Things seem to have settled into a routine, volunteering, organizing groups, church activities, helping people all over the world through social media and running the household.  It was enough to keep him busy and fulfilled.

But of course, Ataxia had to deal another blow.  Jason had three car accidents within a short time. He decided on his own, that it was time to give up his license.  We are extremely grateful that no one was injured in these accidents and Jason wanted to make sure no one ever was.  However, there is always public transportation, friends, and family to help get him places, but it was not the same. Jason’s world shrunk again.  But Jason being Jason took it in stride, we made more adjustments and kept moving forward.

                                ………………………………………………….

When I was a kid, there was nothing that would bring down swift retribution like that which I would experience whenever I had the good sense, and foresight, to ask my mother if a friend could come over, or spend the night, while that friend was standing right beside me.

I don't know how many times she told me she hated when I did this, but I can imagine that if I had scratched little marks into the wall, in groups of five like a prisoner counting down his days until eventual freedom, I would have had somewhere north of more than a lot.

With the luck that I had during childhood, it's easy for me to speculate that after having received a spanking for the first infraction, I more than likely would have gotten caught etching yet another mark into the wall, and sent to the woodshed again. As many times as I had to pull my pants down in the realization of the impending spanking, it is a wonder that I even wore pants at all for the first ten or so years.

Asking my mother this question in the presence of my friends made her feel as if, in reality, there was no choice. Unfortunately, I was never able to grasp this simple concept entirely but stumbled upon a complete understanding years later, when I had my own kids... and the job of picking them up from a friend's house had fallen on me. Adulthood had also bestowed upon me a full and complete comprehension of a saying that I had heard quite often in my youth, "I hope you have kids just like you someday." I did...and I didn't like being asked the question in front of their friends, either.

I have to give my kids credit, though, and in turn my former child, for at least asking. As difficult as it may have been to say no, by pulling some vague excuse out of my back pocket, I had a choice….even in the face of having two sets of puppy dog eyes trained on me.

However, this annoying childhood ritual, which seemingly has been passed down for generations is not even close to the bundle of joy that SCA has become for me. I mean, it didn't even ask first if it could come over. How did it know that I didn't already have plans? It just barged right in, attempting to make itself at home...as if there had been a play-date that had already been arranged.

Not a day goes by in which I don't want to take it out to the woodshed. If I had my way, SCA wouldn't be able to sit down for days. Don't spare the rod whenever SCA is involved…..or something like that. I forget how the saying goes, but that seems to be close.

I have a first cousin who is one year older than I am, and when I was a kid, we would hang out, and do everything that we could together. We went to separate schools, so we didn't see each other a lot, but when we did, we were inseparable. During those years I would have extended sleepovers at his house, often staying for a week or more.

His family owned numerous acres of berries, and so I would spend some of my days helping to pick the harvest…..because those were the glorious days of forced child labor. The days when parents would shake their kids out of bed, seemingly just several minutes after they had sent them kicking and screaming to bed in the first place. They would feed their bleary-eyed children breakfast, drive them in the family car that had no seat belts straight to a factory, shipyard, steel mill, or berry field, and then drop them off with the promise of doing it all over again the next day.

But, I've gone a little afield off my subject again, because I wanted to focus on the longer sleepovers. I mean, there's quite a big difference between my experiences as a child, and that of my kid's. Take video games for an example. We didn't have them. The Atari didn't make an appearance until I was in my early teens, and even then our extended video game sessions consisted of the five minutes it took to get the machine on, warmed up and ready to play, and then the inevitable parental intervention which signaled our need to return to forced labor.

I may have exaggerated the severity of the work that was a part of the lengthy sleepovers at my cousin's house. We did pick berries for his parents on their farm, but we also had an enormous amount of fun, and I always looked forward to those times. No matter how much fun they were, though, I knew that they were only temporary. The fun times would eventually come to an end because they had been scheduled for a beginning and an end.

Everything, it seemed, was supposed to work in this fashion. By looking at the calendar, and planning an event. Apparently, though, SCA didn't grow up that way or learn that lesson. Because, not only did SCA not ask me verbally first if it could come over, it didn't even have the consideration to send me a text, tweet, Snapchat, Facebook message, or even a smoke signal beforehand. What's worse, is that now it doesn't even appear to have an end date in mind, either. I'm sorry, but I see this as incredibly rude behavior…..even for a neurological disease.

While I do not believe that SCA deserves the benefit of the doubt or any consideration, I am willing to admit that maybe he just has nowhere else he can go. Could it be possible that he does not leave me alone because no one else wants him? But what makes this disease so sure that I want him? Maybe I already had plans.

Maybe it is entirely arrogant of SCA to assume that I want him and that I ought to accommodate him for the rest of my life. Because the fact is I really, really don't, but he will never know that because he's never taken the time to ask. He just barged into my life one day, and this, I find to be an inexcusable form of conduct.

A big event that marked my childhood was the parental note. The permission slip was a highly prized possession, and whenever I was able to attain one I would smugly wave it around and show everybody.  Having that rare and highly cherished parental note felt pretty much like the carte blanche of my childhood.

In reality, the slip of paper just gave me permission to, on a certain day….and only on that day, to get off the bus at a friend's house, or maybe an excuse to miss PE for a day or two. That never stopped me, though, from imaging that it gave me the keys, privilege, and the physical rights to every candy store within a hundred mile radius…. figuratively speaking, of course.

The rules were, that if you didn't have a note, you weren't going to be allowed to go wherever you wanted or do anything on a whim. Those were the rules….everyone knew them, and everyone followed them. I did, and I never had a problem.

That is until SCA twenty-four seven showed up. What was the first thing I did? I checked, and guess what? No note! I tell you, this guy though? Apparently he feels that he can completely ignore the norms of society...which I see as utterly rude….and unfathomably irresponsible.

Capítulo 3 A estadia prolongada

E agora?

O mundo do Jason encolheu novamente.

Essas eram as regras....todos as conheciam, e todos as seguiam.
