Words of Jessica Wolfer (3rd child)...

When I was a little kid, during the day, my mom went to work fairly early in the morning, and my siblings went to school. This meant that until I was old enough for school, it was my dad and I every day. Now to be fair I was pretty little, so I just remember bits and pieces, but I remember, for me, what truly matters. I don’t remember my father's Ataxia; I didn’t see any signs of this until I was a little bit older. What I do remember is waking up every day and asking for apple juice and my father pulling my cup out of the fridge. He had been prepared for me to ask this, seeing as it was a daily demand. I remember playing hide-and-go-seek and being amazing at it; I mean when your dad is six foot-two inches and a good actor, it makes it pretty easy to win. I remember playing game after game, watching movies and just hanging out with my dad.
While, as you can imagine, some things have changed over the years. I have noticed my father’s Ataxia more and more, we have grown out of hide-and-seek now, but my dad's attitude and selflessness have stayed the same. Instead of just knowing I’d want apple juice, now it’s things like before I leave for work or school he will go out and scrape my windshield so that I don’t have to, or by preparing dinner for the family almost every night. Over the years as his condition has worsened his attitude has remained the same…. continuing to put others first, remain positive, inspire others, and find humor in almost any situation.

                                      …………………………………………….

Christmas time at our house would always begin in November when I was growing up... because that was when my brothers and I would go on the hunt to find the exact location of our hidden presents. Every year mom would store the unwrapped presents in a hiding place, and we would have a little extra something to be thankful for when the family sat down to consume turkey on Thanksgiving..... if we could just manage to locate the stash of gifts before then.

The goal was to, like I said, to find them BEFORE they got wrapped...and as I remember it, we were only successful at this a few times. Mom had discovered that we had been looking and responded by moving her hiding spot. It wasn't her only response, mind you, but it is the only one that I will mention here.

During all the other years, my brothers and I had another thing that we did around Christmas-time that drove my mother crazy. She could not quite seem to keep us from shaking the Christmas presents under the tree as soon as she put them out.  Then we would set about trying to guess what they contained, based on what it was that we had asked for, and what we thought would fit in the size of a package that were currently very carefully scrutinizing.

One Christmas, in an effort to keep us from guessing which presents belonged to us, mom decided to number all the gifts, and in that way, we would not be able to figure this out. She wrote all our names and the corresponding numbers on a master list, and it appeared to be an entirely foolproof plan. That is, until Christmas morning when she discovered that she had lost the list and had no idea where to find it.  And so on that Christmas morning, my brothers and I took the packages that seemed like they might be something we wanted and opened them up. If we got it wrong and opened up something that we had not asked for, we would politely give it to the person who had asked for it.

This system worked in the face of the fact that we had no other alternative, and it was a good system for my older brothers. However, for me as the younger brother, it took a little more tact to set my presents free from the clutches of my older brothers, who claimed everything was theirs just to torment me.

There were four of us brothers living at home, and I was the third child, so when my two older brothers got married and moved out, I became the big brother. My little brother (there was a seven-year difference) had an annoying habit of getting up about five a.m. on Christmas morning and running around the house yelling and screaming, and telling everyone to wake up so that he could open presents. One year I decided that I had taken enough, and made plans that would, for once, give him something that he could truly scream about.

Our father used to tell us that if we were not good, Santa Claus would still come, but he would fill our stockings full of raw carrot sticks instead of toys. Being the kindly older brother that I am, I decided to have a little fun with that. I got up at three-thirty a.m. Christmas morning and poured all the toys out of my brother's stocking and filled it full of carrots.  I was awakened at five a.m. per usual, as he ran around screaming bloody murder, and lamenting about the unfairness of it all. I'm pretty sure that I got in trouble for this stunt, but it was totally worth it.

Another of the good times that happened around the family Christmas tree was the first year of Christmas that Melissa and I spent together as a married couple. There was going to be a large family gathering with my older brothers and their families at my parent's house on Christmas Day. To make things simpler, Melissa and I decided to spend the night at my parent's house on Christmas Eve. The opportunity to have some fun presented itself to us when my mom decided to put us in the same bedroom that she had chosen to store all of the gifts in for the next day's gathering.

We selected several packages, carefully unwrapped them, and then removed what was inside. For my oldest brother and his wife, we decided to switch their gifts, and then carefully re-wrapped them so that no one would be able to tell. The result was that now my oldest brother received the house coat that his wife had wanted, and she got a very nice men's sweater instead.

For my younger brother, we took out the brand new pair of jeans that he had been wanting and replaced it with the dirty pair that I had been wearing that day. The confusion on my mom's face when everyone opened their gifts was priceless, not to mention the look of astonishment on the faces of the recipients. My younger brother especially was confused, as he held up the dirty jeans, kept turning them around in the air, and muttering, "Uh, thanks, Mom….".

Just like many of you, Christmas time held some very dear and wonderful memories. Probably the earliest one that I have is when I was four or five years old, and the second oldest brother had been begging my father for a horse. My dad, however, was clear on the fact that he did not want a horse because he raised cattle, and a horse would ruin his fences. On one Christmas morning, several months after this whole thing had begun to brew, my brothers and I had gotten up while it was still dark outside. In a fervor of anticipation, we were first told that we needed to go out to the barn and do all the chores before we were going to be allowed to eat breakfast or open our gifts.

I tromped out to the barn, using a flashlight while being accompanied by my brothers, who were complaining, and grumbling all the way. The brother that seemed to be complaining the most was the one who wanted the horse, but little did he know at the time that the horse that he so desperately wanted, and had been begging our father for, was in the barn waiting for him. As soon as his light struck the horse, he froze, going into complete shock, and wondering if what he was seeing was real.  I wasn't even the one who was the recipient of such a pleasant surprise that Christmas morning, but I will remember it always.

Like most children, it took me awhile to realize that Christmas was not just about getting presents, but it was about the joy of giving. Some people in your life are always easier to purchase or make things for, but for others; it is consistently harder to think of things to get for them. Luckily, someone came up with the brilliant plan of the gift receipt.

I have been both the giver, and the receiver of the gift receipt, but I have never actually had the need to use one. I can't even remember a time when I was glad someone gave one to me or thought upon receiving a gift, that the first thing I was going to do was return it. I never thought this way; that is until I received the special gift of SCA.  If I had been able to refuse delivery, to begin with, I wouldn't have even needed a gift receipt. However, not being in a position that I could reject the shipment, it would have been nice if I would have at least been provided with the option of returning it.

The nice thing about the gift receipt was that in the end, it didn't matter what the reason was that you were returning the item. So with my SCA, it wouldn't have mattered at all that I did not want the gift of a neurological handicap because it was not my size, or because it made my butt look too large. It wouldn't have mattered that it caused me to look fat, or that the color did not match my hair, eyes, shoes, or any of my clothing. And, it also would have been of absolutely no consequence that I had already tried it on, and decided that it just simply was not going to work out for me.

The fact remains, however, that SCA did not come with any possible means to refuse delivery, or any way- in lieu of a gift receipt- to return it. All of this leads me to the conclusion that all that remains for me now is to try my best to use my SCA in a positive way. It has become my constant endeavor to see that this very thing comes to pass.

Tanto quanto me lembro,  nós só fomos bem-sucedidos apenas algumas vezes.

The Last Laugh...Based On A True Story, Chapter 6...Better Than GPS

Chapter 6.jpeg
This chapter has also been translated into Portuguese and begins at the end of the English version.

Words from Megan Wolfer (2nd child)...

When I look back on it now, I don’t remember any gradual change happening with my dad. As far as my memory goes back, he has always had the symptoms of SCA. The thing I remember the most is how scary the unknown was. This disease is so broad. Several different symptoms can occur, and it could become life threatening. My father was expected to be in a wheelchair years ago. I’ve always felt incredibly lucky that his particular case has held back from being more severe than it could be.

                                …………………………………………………………….

Back in the stone ages (or nineteen ninety-one) Melissa and I moved from Salem, Oregon to Harrisonburg, Virginia so that she could continue her education at a University. We bought a large station wagon, carefully stuffed all our possessions inside, and proceeded to drive across the country.

I don't want to focus on the fact that we drove a station wagon, which is a rare automobile these days, one that is not often seen in the wild (on the road). I do, however, want to focus on another equally rare, and very dated, item…...the Rand McNally Road Atlas.

My father-in-law had bestowed upon the two of us one of his tried-and-true used Atlases. The book was about two feet wide by three feet long, was leather bound, and contained detailed maps of every state. It had a second-party voice activation system, which had been pre-loaded in. This meant that the first person (or driver most of the time) would ask the second person (the passenger, again most of the time) where they were and where to go next.

The second person would then turn to the map, activate the manual stylus (a finger) locate the information requested, and then verbally respond back to the first person with the required information. It was the process that seemed to work well a vast majority of the time, and always had a good track record for Melissa and myself. That was, of course, until the day when I mapped a seemingly straight path from Central Virginia to Southwestern Pennsylvania.

The route that I had planned took us on what appeared to be a straight shot through the heart of West Virginia. Although I had read the map correctly, and the intended route did take us to where our destination was….the path through West Virginia was anything but straight. However, it was very narrow in places….so I guess if an exciting yet frantic road trip was my goal, I at least had gotten it half right.

Now, I have never been pregnant, but Melissa was several months along at the time with our first child. I also have it on excellent authority that curved and narrow roads, harrowed driving conditions, and a wife that had a tendency that leaned towards nausea because she is carrying your child are not things that go together well. I kept wishing that we could be removed from the situation, as easily as items were eliminated in the Sesame Street song, as one of these things clearly didn't belong here…..

Some people, however, would choose instead to use single state maps which were folded over, and pressed approximately five hundred times, into a convenient accordion-styled manuscript. This form of map was often bigger than the state that they depicted, and once these forms of documents were unfolded, and used for the first time, they were never the same. Trying to follow all the correct folds to return them to their beginning shape, often had a closer resemblance to an extended Origami session...and this inevitably would result in high levels of frustration. Which, in turn, would cause the offending map to be wadded into a ball and thrown into the backseat.

These maps were also readily available, and they were instantly located on a large metal turnstile at almost any roadside gas station, or convenience store. They were arranged in rows and usually were lined up beside other maps, brochures, ancient documents, and pamphlets pointing out some local spots of interest. Such as, the stop sign that had been misspelled, had become a national sensation, and that lay just a mere twenty-five miles up the road.

If you were traveling by yourself, then, unfortunately, the second-party verbal directions were not an option, and so you had to plan accordingly. At this point, the only alternative available to you was to open the map to its full extent, and spread it out onto any flat surface that was big enough to hold a regulation-sized game of football. Your next day's travel would be located, and highlighted for quick, easy reference when you were able to stop at a rest stop, one that had been thoughtfully located 300 miles from your last provided opportunity to take a much-needed break.

This forum of navigation worked very well, but eventually it gracefully bowed out, and if you will excuse the pun, served as the road map which took us to an age of GPS-based maps. These are now the form of mapping assistance that is in predominant use today, being found as either a built-in unit in your car, an aftermarket unit that is mounted on the dashboard of your car or as a map program on your smartphone.

One of the nice things about this system is that it is based in real time and continually shows you your current location. The exercise apps that a lot of us are using these days work on this same principle. I used an exercise app on my phone that would track me while I walked, and when finished, would provide me with a detailed map showing the complete route that I had taken. Complete, that is, unless during that time I had gone into a building, like when I walked to the mall from my house. When I did that, there were gaps in areas where it was not able to track, and record my progress, because I was not out in the open where the GPS could get a clear look at me, and a fix on my location.

When compared to this example, my SCA is the clear winner, as it never loses it's signal and knows exactly where I am at any point. Having that knowledge may seem to be a handy, and a nice feature, but you should read the rest of my review before you run out and try to acquire an SCA.

Although the always-on tracking feature may seem to be convenient, the truth is that SCA is, in EVERY OTHER way, a very clunky, awkward, and unpleasant system to have, and to try and use in everyday situations. The integration and connectivity are spotty at best, and there are times when only walking around that I feel like I have a ball-and-chain strapped around my ankle. Sometimes it even seems as if both my wrists, and ankles have been shackled together by very short chains.

I find SCA to be very intrusive, one that is always seeming to be present, and steadily encroaching into my personal space. I can never actually rid myself of SCA's dominant nature, as there appears to be no reset button, gift receipt, or lemon clause that would enable me to return it.

Over the years, I have tried everything that I could think of to rid myself of his (SCA's), obnoxious, and abrasive tendencies. I have tried losing weight by denying him of some of his favorite foods. I have purposely GAINED weight in an ongoing effort to make him uncomfortable, and unable to fit in the clothes that he likes to borrow from me. I listen to, and watch whatever I want to, showing no regard for his tastes, or desires. I make him do all the household chores... mowing the lawn, walk the dogs, etc. I go out of my way to ensure that he always gets the blame whenever anything undesirable happens. I've done it all, without hesitation, and still, I can't shake my SCA stalker.

I also find SCA to be very stubborn, and demanding at times….but just hold on, though, don't decide yet, because there's more.

He watches me sleep all night. How do I know this to be true? Because whenever I open my eyes…..no matter what time it is…..he is right there. He follows me to the bathroom in the morning, helps me shave, insists on showering with me, gets my coffee…., etc., etc. His presence goes on and on, and he's with me the whole twenty-four hours a day, every day.

Even though you may think that this kind of personal attention would make him an excellent assistant of sorts, I assure you that any illusion of being helpful is only in his head and that I do NOT share this opinion.  Oh, I guess you could say he's an assistant after some fashion because he does assist me in running into walls, stubbing my toes, poking myself in the eyes, falling down stairs, and tripping on everything….including the flat ground.

No, I cannot personally endorse SCA. He might constantly be on, and better than a GPS at always knowing my location, but he comes with a high price tag. Being always on is not a good thing in every situation, and in this one, it just doesn't work.

And of course, I would return him...if I could.

Ela vigia-me toda a noite enquanto durmo.

The Last Laugh...Based On A True Story, Chapter 5...Brain Washed Into Another Language

Chapter 5.jpeg
The audio version..www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqo9J7F8lM4

This has also been translated into Portuguese and is attached at the end of the English version.
The words of Kameron Wolfer (1st child)...
My dad was diagnosed with cerebellar ataxia in 2003.  I was eleven years old at the time of his diagnosis.  I had no idea about what a cerebellum was, for my interest in learning about the human mind would not come for another decade.  All I knew was, judging by my parent’s reactions to this diagnosis, life for my dad would never be the same.

                                            ……………………………………………..

There was a time when I not only desired to learn a second language but also thought myself capable of success in that respect. That was the reason why I so boldly, and confidently, added the Beginning German course to my class schedule my Sophomore year of College.

Along the same vein, that it seemed a vast number of the things in my life moved, my desire to learn a different language did not mesh very well with my actual linguistic abilities. Looking back on my efforts to speak something besides English, brings to mind someone who is determined to combine oil and water together, stirring them into a cohesive mixture.

To suggest, however, that my efforts while I was in school can be described in any way as being determined, well….that may be stretching the truth a bit. The reality was that having a sustainable drive to stick it out through tough times was the root of the whole problem. I lacked the sufficient drive to get things done. As soon as something presented any difficulty, I would quickly begin a furious round of backpedaling.

The thing was that a lot of the obstacles facing me were self-inflicted...like I was purposely setting myself up. For example, the language class that I had added to my class schedule was at eight a.m.....eight a.m.! Quite frankly, I seriously struggled early in the morning to speak anything that resembled the English language...forget about any other languages! Even with a pretty decent command of slang, and a good handle on the proper uses of some downright bad English, I struggled.

I was not, by any definition, what you would refer to as a morning person. In fact, the only way to keep me from demonstrating a serious, and habitual, abuse upon the snooze button of the alarm clock, was to put the offending digital squawk-box outside of easy reach.

Thinking that this was a plan of complete genius, I turned the radio alarm on full blast and set it on a shelf across the room from my bed. The music would come on at the maximum volume, and to shut the radio alarm off, I would have to get out of bed. Since I slept on the top bunk, it would be deemed as too much of a chore to climb back up into bed at this point, and I would resign myself to being up for the day. To do it this way seemed to be a sound theory.

Having the clock across the room appeared to make perfect sense, at least it did to p.m. guy, who had hatched the plan, and set the whole thing up. But not so much for early morning guy, who in a sleepy and frantic state, forgot that he was on the top bunk when he shot out of bed to put a panicked stop to the loud music, which had so eloquently barged into his dreams.

The act of a full body, early-morning plummet onto a hardwood floor was sufficiently enough to wake me up. The explosive early morning activity also served well as a way to wake up my roommate, and the friendly residents of the room directly below ours, although I don't remember them being quite as pleasant afterward. As bone-jarring as it was, however, I was a quick study. I only required another 4 or 5 early morning meetings on the cold and unforgiving floor until I was able to first, wake up and remember that I was on the top bunk, climb down to floor level, and continue to the task of gently embracing the offending alarm clock.

College was my first, and last, stint at trying to become a bi-lingual man. That is until SCA moved in, and taught me a new form of communication, called slurring. The language of this kind is unique, as it possesses the ability to become a subset of any dialect, and can be smoothly integrated into any and every Nationality. However, before I go any further, I would like to make it clear that in no uncertain terms or in any way did I EVER volunteer, or elect to learn this language. It was thrust upon me….I have been brainwashed.

I will have to say, though, that I have become rather proficient at it. I can speak it, understand others' who speak it, write it, and even on occasion translate it for those poor souls who are of the single lingual persuasion. The only thing that stands in the way of becoming versed in this form of communication completely is the ability to read it. My writing has become, mostly, unreadable...even to me.

The efforts needed to read my attempts at legible penmanship have become an exercise that is based solely upon my memory of what it was that I was writing down. What I mean is, that if a note to myself hasn't been jotted down within, say, the preceding 2 or 3 hours, then I have no idea what it means. Indeed...it feels as if I am trying to decipher ancient hieroglyphics, ("What is that...a picture? What could I have possibly been trying to tell myself? Did someone fall into a well….?).

I keep a pad of paper beside our computer for the purpose of taking quick little notes. Most of the time the top page will fill up with something that resembles a madman's scratches that just might pertain to his quantum theories of nothingness. My wife, Melissa, will ask me sometimes, while she is straightening up, if a full page of my scribblings is something important, and do I want to keep it? Well...maybe it is something important, but apparently, I don't have a need to hang on to it because I no longer can read it, or possess the linguistic skills needed to make it out clearly.

I do think, though, that it would be a step in a positive direction if slurring would be recognized as an official language. I would also like to suggest that this form of language be assigned a new name. If this type of dialect could have a name that might put an emphasis on the flowing nature of slurred speech. I would like to suggest that it be referred to as cursive-speech.

I have two reasons for proposing this name change. The first one is precisely what I just suggested. Cursive-speech would be a name that would emphasize, and capture, the romantic flow in which words are connected within this dialect. The second reason has to do with the direct availability of the name cursive.

There once was a time when cursive writing made up a significant percentage of the written word. Everyone was taught in grade school how to write it. The alphabet was the same, but there was more of an artistic elegance in the way it was approached. Letters were connected in sweeping arcs to make words, and cursive writing was viewed to be a more mature, and professional form of writing.

Those days are gone now, and in fact, cursive and writing are no longer even associated with one another. Writing, which is not my area of interest here, has taken on other forms. Cursive, however...which IS my area of interest, has been stuck up on a high shelf to gather dust, to nearly be forgotten to a larger degree every day.

Cursive can still be a productive member of society, and so I am proposing that it would be taken down, dusted off, and reinstated to the area of speech.  I feel that the term cursive-speech brings more class and dignity to those who speak the Ataxian dialect, more so than does continually referring to the language as slurred speech. This is how I will be defining my speech from now on….. who's with me?

Calligraphy is another form of writing....but, unfortunately, it is still being used at the present, because my sloppy Ataxia-based handwriting could, and would, also benefit from a simple name change. Instead of people scratching their heads when they observe my attempts at legible scribbles...I could explain that I am practicing my Ataxiian Calligraphy.

I think that it would be a positive thing to do...and now, just like I propose that cursive be reassigned, I am patiently waiting on writing to be done with the art of calligraphy...so that I can petition that Ataxia writing might someday also enjoy the benefits of being given a new designation.

Faltava-me a energia para fazer as coisas.

me acordar.
